KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The postponement of Sunday's Kansas City Chiefs game against the New England Patriots has elicited strong emotions from Chiefs Kingdom.

“I’ve cried twice now about football," said Ellen Johnson.

The Johnson family traveled from Omaha and has been in town since Thursday to attend the game, which originally was scheduled for Sunday.

“This is our first trip kind of since the pandemic started, and we felt comfortable knowing all the protocols that are in place at the Chiefs stadium," Ellen Johnson said.

The trip to Kansas City also marked the first time the kids would have seen a Chiefs game in person.

Ellen Johnson said her 7-year-old son was looking forward to watching the Chiefs offense score many points, and her 4-year-old daughter was planning on asking Patrick Mahomes to marry her at halftime.

The Johnson's plans now are on hold following positive COVID-19 tests from both the Chiefs and Patriots.

The announcement came hours before the Patriots were set to fly to KCMO.

“It is pretty sad," Ellen Johnson said. "We were pretty disappointed, but we also knew that coming into this trip, it was a possibility."

But Sunday will not be the first time the Johnsons have missed out on seeing Patrick Mahomes play in person. Last season, Ellen said, she had tickets to the Chiefs game against the Green Bay Packers, only Mahomes was out due to a knee injury.

“It’s kind of just two years in a row bad luck," she said.

The NFL has not formally announced when the game will be played, but has said Monday or Tuesday could be an option.

The Johnson family told 41 Action News they plan to stick around.

“We’ll see, we’ll take them back if they reschedule, or we’ll go Tuesday if they do that," Josh Johnson said.

Tickets purchased for the now-postponed game will be valid for the new date.
