12:15 p.m. | The New England Patriots landed at Kansas City International Airport some time before noon, according to a tweet from the airport, which showed the team deplaning.

7:30 a.m. | Per ESPN sources, both the Chiefs and Patriots returned negative COVID-19 tests Monday morning and the Patriots are headed to Kansas City to play.

ORIGINAL STORY | It's been a strange journey to game day for the Chiefs and Patriots, who were originally scheduled to play at 3:25 p.m. on Sunday at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, Missouri.

The game was postponed 24 hours (and change) to 6:05 p.m. on Monday after players for both teams tested positive for COVID-19 on Saturday.

Patriots quarterback Cam Newton reportedly tested positive for COVID-19, which prompted the NFL to announce Saturday it had postponed the game.

The Chiefs also reportedly had a quarterback test positive, Jordan Ta'amu, who is on the team's practice squad.

This will be the Chiefs' second straight Monday night game after spanking the Baltimore Ravens in a more traditional (and previously scheduled) primetime showdown Sept. 28. It also means Kansas City, which is scheduled to host the Las Vegas Raiders next Sunday and travel to Buffalo on Oct. 15, will have to play three games in an 11-day span.

Of course, that assumes there are no more scheduling hiccups wrought by the COVID-19 pandemic, which can't be guaranteed. The Tennessee at Pittsburgh, which also had been scheduled for Sunday, was postponed to Oct. 25 due to positive tests among Titans players and staff.

After two straight road games, the showdown with the Patriots marks the season’s second home game as coach Andy Reid and company play another game that could have major implications on possible playoff seeding.

There’s a new sheriff in town for New England, which handed the offense’s reins to Newton after Tom Brady took his six Super Bowl rings to Tampa. He had the Patriots off to a 2-1 start, but those reins will now be passed to veteran backup Brian Hoyer, who outperformed 2019 fourth-round pick Jarrett Stidham in training camp to earn the No. 2 spot on the depth chart, with Newton sidelined.

Co-hosts Nick Jacobs and Tod Palmer previewed the matchup on the latest “4th & 1” podcast.

The architect of the New England dynasty, Bill Belichick, remains. The Patriots beat Miami and Las Vegas sandwiched around a five-point loss at Seattle, when Newton got stuffed at the goal line on the game’s final play.

The Chiefs — who are 3-0 with wins against Houston, the Los Angeles Chargers and Baltimore — had fun with Monday night’s surprisingly easy win.

In addition to “Smoked Sausage,” Reid drew up a touchdown play for left tackle Eric Fisher.

He boasts the highest scoring average for any opposing coach who has faced Belichick’s defenses at least five times, scoring more than 27 points per game in those meetings.

Reid is 3-3 against New England since arriving in Kansas City, including three games when the Chiefs scored at least 40 points.

Kansas City is looking for its four consecutive start of at least 4-0 to the season. The Chiefs have started 4-0 or better four times in Reid’s previous seven seasons with the club.

Jim Nantz and Tony Romo, who got to spend an extra day in Kansas City (and hopefully got an extra helping of barbecue while here), will have the call.

The only truly disappointing news from the win in Baltimore was rookie cornerback L’Jarius Sneed’s broken collarbone. He was placed on injured reserve and will miss at least a month, likely more.

Defensive tackle Chris Jones, who was limited in practice this week with a groin injury, is officially listed as questionable, but the rest of the active roster, including defensive end Alex Okafor (hamstring), should be available Sunday.

The injury once again leaves Kansas City thin at cornerback.

Veteran starter Bashaud Breeland remains suspended for one more game and the Chiefs’ other starting corner, Charvarius Ward, missed the Chargers’ overtime win. Breeland pleaded guilty to two charges Friday stemming from an April arrest in South Carolina.

Some of the biggest Chiefs news this week came away from the field.

Mahomes and his fiancee, Brittany Matthews, announced that they are expecting a baby next year. The 2018 NFL MVP and reigning Super Bowl MVP said he’s excited to become a dad — and also had some thoughts on teammates babysitting.

The Chiefs and their Truman Sports Complex “roommates,” the Kansas City Royals, conducted a voter registration drive on Tuesday.

Arrowhead will serve as a polling place for the Nov. 3 general election.
