KANSAS CITY, Mo. — As the Kansas City Chiefs prepare to take on the Houston Texans Thursday night, special teams coordinator Dave Toub said it will take a few plays for the Chiefs rookies to settle down.

One of the new additions to the Chiefs roster fans can expect to see on the field Thursday is rookie linebacker Willie Gay Jr.

“I’m going to play as much as Coach Spags (Steve Spagnuolo) allows me to, so whenever he puts me on the field, I’m going to be there," Gay said.

Since arriving in Kansas City after being drafted to the Chiefs in 2020, Gay told the media Tuesday that he's been preparing for Game One ever since.

“Just to be on the field is a big blessing for me, so defense, offense, special teams, they’re all important so to be able to say I’ll be a big player on special teams is great, you know, and I’m excited for that," Gay said.

As Thursday approaches, Gay said he's been looking back on his time at Mississippi State University and feeling the first game nerves all over again.

“I just remember my first play on defense, just seeing the student section and just dreaming of that moment before. Now I’m living it and kind of like, how it’s going to be this Thursday, so it’s special for sure," he said.

With an unusual training camp under his belt, Gay said he believes he got better and is ready for the level of intensity the NFL brings.
