KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Reigning NFL MVP Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs’ quest to end a 50-year Super Bowl drought begins Sept. 8 in Jacksonville and includes five primetime games, including three slated for Sunday Night Football on your 41 Action News station.
The NFL released its 2019 schedule Wednesday night.
Surprisingly, the AFC Championship Game rematch against the reigning Super Bowl champion New England Patriots isn’t part of Kansas City’s primetime slate — at least not yet.
The Chiefs and Patriots meet for Mahomes/Tom Brady Bowl III at 3:25 p.m. on Dec. 8 at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts.
While that game won’t be on Sunday Night Football, unless it gets flexed after Thanksgiving, Mahomes and company will be in the primetime spotlight plenty.
The Chiefs will play a rematch of the AFC Divisional playoff game Oct. 6 against the Indianapolis Colts at Arrowhead Stadium on Sunday Night Football, followed by a home matchup against the Houston Texans in week 6.
Sunday Night Football returns to Arrowhead in week 8 when Kansas City will host the Green Bay Packers, a potentially tantalizing quarterback matchup between Mahomes and former NFL MVP Aaron Rodgers, on Oct. 27.
The Chiefs also play at the Chicago Bears on Sunday Night Football in the penultimate game of the regular season Dec. 22 at Soldier Field, a game that pits coach Andy Reid against his former offensive coordinator Matt Nagy.
Kansas City heads south of the border in November for a potentially pivotal AFC West showdown against the Los Angeles Chargers on Nov. 18 at Estadio Azteca in Mexico City. The game will be on Monday Night Football.
Kansas City hosts the Chargers in week 17.
Other AFC West games include Oct. 17 at Denver on Thursday Night Football with the return game Dec. 15 at Arrowhead.
The Chiefs play their final game at their longtime rival the Oakland Raiders in week 2. The Raiders are moving to Las Vegas in 2020. They host the Raiders in week 13.
Kansas City's home opener will be against the Baltimore Ravens on Sept. 22. They then wrap up September at Detroit.
November starts with a home game against Minnesota, followed by a road contest at the Tennessee Titans.
