Time vs. money: Parking for the Big 12 Tournament

The Big 12 Tournament is one of the busiest times in downtown Kansas City.

Thousands of basketball fans pour into the Power and Light District, and many need a place to park.

41 Action News checked out your options.

Parking near the Sprint Center is convenient, but it can be costly. Fans paid anywhere from $20 to $60 to be within a few blocks of the arena.

"We parked right behind the Sprint Center; it was very expensive," said KU fan Lien Quan. "You usually could park for $20-25, but this time it was $60.”

"We parked west of here down by the convention center," said Iowa State fan John Page. "$20."

If time is on your side, parking at Union Station and hopping aboard the KC Streetcar is an easy option, but not as quick.

We timed it out, and it took us about 23 minutes from parking in the garage to getting off the streetcar at the P&L stop. Parking at Union Station ranges from $5 to $12 max.

"If you’re willing to park outside that zone, you’re good," said Kansas State fan Lauren Weninger.

The city bus is the cheapest option, costing only $1.50. Fans should look for the Main Street MAX buses. You can visit www.ridekc.org for more information.

Taxi services and Ubers are always available, too, but the price can depend on the time of day and where you are requesting them from.
