KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Clyde Edwards-Helaire was just Clyde Edwards for much of his childhood.

As he became a recognizable name around his hometown of Baton Rouge as a budding football star, he decided to alter it.

His stepfather, Shannon Helaire, had been in Clyde's life since he was a baby, so when Clyde was 14 and already turning heads on the football field, he legally changed his name.

"Out of respect, I added the last name," Edwards-Helaire told 41 Action News.

He kept Edwards to honor his biological father, but added Helaire to honor the man who raised him.

"Knowing and understanding that in high school, that's when your name starts to flow more," Edwards-Helaire said.

Ever since, he's been Edwards-Helaire and will wear that on his jersey in Kansas City above his new number, 25.
