Eric Berry said on a NFL Network show that he "doesn't feel comfortable playing under the franchise tag this year."
The defensive back appeared on NFL Network'sSuper Bowl Live on Thursday. He told sportscasters:
"I'm definitely not going to play under the franchise tag this year," Berry said on the show. "I want to end my career in Kansas City. I want to play there. I love the city, I love the vibe, I love my teammates. I really look at them more than teammates. We've been through a lot and they supported me a lot. And the organization. But I don't feel comfortable playing under the franchise tag this year."
A franchise tag "allows smaller-market teams to compete with big-market teams by letting them lock up their prospective free agents beyond the original time frame of their contracts," according to the Washington Post.
Berry's franchise tag is about $13 million this season.
41 Action News Sports Director Frank Boal expects the Chiefs to sign him to a long term deal.
"He's the heart and soul of this franchise right now," Boal said.
