KANSAS CITY, Kan. — NASCAR announced its second installment of racing on Thursday and Kansas Speedway wasn't a part of it.
The racing circuit was supposed to hit Kansas Speedway the weekend of May 30-31, but that weekend now belongs to Bristol, for a number of reasons says Kansas Speedway President Pat Warren.
"It really has more to do right now with where we can race as an industry," Warren said. "Distance from Charlotte, how states are dealing with the COVID-19 crisis, those are the factors that are being considered much more than trying to sort of make up dates."
Thus, the Kansas race hasn't been canceled, only postponed to a yet-to-be determined date.
"We don't know when those will run. My personal hope is that the situation in our country and our region continues to improve and hopefully we'll be one of the first or the first race and public event back with fans," Warren said.
In the meantime, NASCAR starts back up this weekend in Darlington for its first races since the coronavirus outbreak.
"I'm obviously very excited about watching it," Warren said. "I think a lot of fans right now would do anything to see any live sporting events. And so we're hoping for a huge audience."
