KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Houston Dash of the National Women’s Soccer League are headed to the postseason for the first time in franchise history, thanks in part to one of their brightest stars with a Kansas city connection.

Shea Groom buried a goal in stoppage time of Sunday’s Challenge Cup final to clinch the championship for Houston, and earned the tournament’s MVP award in the process.

Groom, originally from Liberty, Missouri, started her pro-soccer career in 2015 with FC Kansas City but was traded to Sky Blue FC in 2018 after the team folded.

The NWSL was the first professional sports league in the United States to resume play after the coronavirus pandemic forced a shutdown of all major sports leagues in March.
