KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The University of Kansas will begin allowing fans at athletic events again beginning Monday, Dec. 7 and through Monday, Dec. 14. Chancellor Douglas A. Girod announced Thursday in an open letter to the campus.

KU announced Nov. 17 that it would prohibit fans for the rest of November following an increase in COVID-19 cases in Kansas.

"The decision to begin hosting fans again has been made after consultation with the Pandemic Medical Advisory Team and other university leaders," Girod said. "The decision is based primarily on the current declining trend in COVID-19 positivity and hospitalization rates in our county and region, as well as the fact that Douglas County’s rates continue to be lower than most regions of the country."

The Jayhawks will host three three men’s basketball games, two women’s basketball games and the football team's final home game during the Dec. 7-14 window.

No. 7 Kansas men's basketball No. 9 Creighton on Dec. 8 along with games against the University of Nebraska-Omaha (Dec. 11) and Tarleton Sate University (Dec. 13).

The Jayhawks women's basketball team will host the University of Oklahoma (Dec. 10) and the University of Texas-Rio Grand Valley (Dec. 14).

The winless Kansas football team wraps up its season Dec. 12 against Texas at Memorial Stadium.

Fans will be limited to about 2,500 fans at basketball games and roughly 9,500 at the football game.

KU will continue to monitor COVID-19 cases in the state and the Lawrence area to evaluate whether to allow fans on a week-to-week basis, Girod said in the letter.
