KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Liberty's Kayel Newland stands 5'10" and can post you up as quickly as anything else, but three-pointers have always been her thing.
"Three-pointers have always been kind of a staple of my game," says Newland.
She's correct, considering Newland is now the "new" leader in three-point shooting for Liberty girls basketball.
"I think it's (three-point shooting) easy you can work on every time you get in the gym," adds Newland.
Kayel broke the mark last week by hitting her 151st career three-pointer in a game against Washington.
"We got notified before the game that there was a possibility she was going to break it," said Liberty girls basketball coach Chad Fleming. "But she's not a big individual accolades person. So she wasn't paying attention to it."
But plenty are paying attention to Kayel, who will continue her basketball career at Illinois State next season.
"I really like the coaching staff. I got the opportunity to build some really good relationships with them," said Newland. "And the environment of the town, the tradition, drew me towards them."
Kayel Newland is our HyVee 41 Action News Athlete of the Week. But we made her earn the award by hitting, what else, a three-pointer during the presentation. She nailed it in one take.
