Local hoops standout chooses Stanford, family

Keenan Fitzmorris follows in sister's footsteps

St. James Academy's Keenan Fitzmorris says he wears size 18 shoes. And in those shoes he's a legitimate 7-feet tall. As you'd expect, that has college coaches' mouths watering.

Ivy League schools from the East Coast came calling. The University of Kansas -- right down the road from Fitzmorris's high school -- showed interest. But Keenan is heading west.

To Stanford.

Makes sense. Big-time program in a big-time conference with perhaps even "bigger-time" academics. But if that wasn't enough, Fitzmorris also has another reason -- his big-time sister.

Audriana Fitzmorris was a freshman this past year at Stanford, where she helped lead the Cardinal to a volleyball national championship. Audriana is the former high school National Player of the Year who also led St. James Academy to three state championships in her time there.

She's also 6-foot, 6-inches. Height runs in the family. Their dad played professional basketball in Europe. Their mom was on Peru's national volleyball team AND Peru's national basketball squad.

Thus, Keenan's exploits are just par for the family course. Meanwhile, with his college decision out of the way, Keenan says he's going to concentrate on his senior year of basketball.
