KANSAS CITY, Mo. — If it were up to Chiefs' fans, Patrick Mahomes would have signed a new, long-term contract yesterday.
Brett Veach mentioned possibly wanting to have it done before training camp in July.
Patrick Mahomes is cool with any time.
"I understand and trust the Chiefs organization and everybody that they're going to handle it the right way," Mahomes said via Zoom call on Friday. "I trust my representation that they're going to ease my mind and let me go out there and play the game I love playing."
Mahomes' poise may stem from having a father who went through contract negotiations as a Major League Baseball player.
"I've been in a unique situation where I've grown up getting to see a lot of guys go through contracts and doing a lot of different things," Mahomes said.
The Chiefs picked up Mahomes' 5th-year option this week, meaning he stands to make about $25 million in 2021. But it's expected Mahomes' new deal will be set long before and be worth around $40 million/year.
"I want to be a Chief for a long time. I want to have a contract that says that."
