KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Depending on the year, the Chiefs' trip to Denver has been either a highlight reel or a horror film for Patrick Mahomes.
"I've had kind of an up and down experience in Denver," said Mahomes, who is 5-0 all-time against the Broncos.
The legend of Patrick Mahomes started in Denver on New Year's Eve 2017. Guaranteed a playoff spot, the Chiefs chose to rest starting quarterback Alex Smith and give rookie Patrick Mahomes his first career start.
Mahomes not only led the game-winning drive that day en route to a 27-24 Chiefs' win, but he also became the first quarterback drafted by the Chiefs to win a game for Kansas City since 1987.
"It's a great atmosphere to play in," Mahomes said. "I like going there."
He certainly liked it in 2018 when he led a fourth quarter comeback fueled by his famous left-handed pass to Tyreek Hill. The Chiefs won, 27-23.
"And then I had that game where I got hurt," Mahomes said.
Yes, "that game" -- that all Chiefs fans want to forget -- was a little more than a year ago in Denver, when Mahomes rolled over after a quarterback sneak to find his kneecap dislocated.
The Chiefs eventually won that game, 30-6, but lost Mahomes for the next two starts. Sunday will be Mahomes' first trip back to Denver since that injury.
"Obviously, not the fans this year but they have a great fan base," Mahomes said. "They love their football. So I'm excited for it and it's going to be a snow game, and I'm pretty excited for that as well."
