KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Chiefs claim that General Manager Brett Veach called Patrick Mahomes "the best player" he'd ever seen.
That quote has been proven prescient.
But even the man himself didn't forecast this start to his NFL career.
"I obviously didn't know that we were going to win the Super Bowl and I would get MVP," Mahomes told 41 Action News in an exclusive interview. "But it was cool to be a part of the process and it's still early and hopefully we can keep continuing this thing."
In fact, Mahomes says he wasn't looking ahead at all to the promise of his career.
"I was just trying to take it day-by-day, honestly, I just wanted to be the best player that I could be to help the Kansas City Chiefs win football games."
He's certainly done that and been able to handle all the outside pressure and expectations that come with winning an average of one MVP per year as a starter in the NFL.
Now comes the weight of the richest contract in sports history.
"I feel the same way honestly," Mahomes said. "It's always been going out there, having fun and enjoying playing football, a game that I've grown up loving. It's cool that now I have that security that I can go out there and have fun doing it."
