KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Kansas City, Missouri, Mayor Quinton Lucas said a potential Super Bowl celebration will look different in 2021 amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

“A Chiefs parade, in the classic sense as we know it, is highly unlikely — indeed, won’t happen,” Lucas said during a Tuesday morning call with doctors from the University of Kansas Health System.

Lucas said the city will come up with different ways to celebrate safely if the Chiefs bring home the championship again.

Until then, Lucas asked Kansas Citians to continue taking precautions during another celebratory season in the city.

“Something that we were a little bit concerned about — and don't get me wrong, I am so excited about the Chiefs playoff run — but you know, house parties, a lot of the things that we actually thought could be concerns during the holiday season, come in this kind of holiday season part two,” Lucas said.

Lucas said people should remember to take precautions such as wearing masks and socially distancing.

“Even with the vaccine news, it will still be a while,” Lucas said. “So we hope people are just heeding that good public health advice.”
