KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Roos are first for the first time.
Thursday night at Swinney Recreation Center, the University of Missouri-Kansas City women's basketball team clinched their first league title in team history with a win over third place Utah Valley, 61-53.
They did it with defense.
"The points that we got at the end of the game were wide open lay ups, because of our defense," third-year head coach Jacie Hoyt said. "We talk a lot about our defense generating our offense and that's our best offense is our defense . I was obviously happy to see that pay off tonight."
At 12-3 in the WAC, the Kangaroos finish up their regular season Saturday at home against Seattle.
After that, it's the league tournament in Las Vegas, where the Roos will look for their first NCAA Tournament bid in team history.
