KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Sporting Kansas City Manager Peter Vermes shared a health update Thursday with the media, stating the club has one "unconfirmed" positive COVID-19 test.
Vermes said he will not designate whether it is a player or staff member.
"We've done probably now over a thousand tests," Vermes said on Thursday. "We have an unconfirmed positive test."
Sporting KC is getting ready to leave on July 5 for Orlando, where the club will take part in the MLS is Back Tournament kicking off on July 8. Sporting KC will start match play on July 12 against Minnesota.
The unconfirmed test will not delay the team's departure, Vermes said. He said protocol "suggests" the player should be tested again.
"And one of the things that we actually went with is that, we feel it is important when you do the next test you actually do it with a different lab so that is completely separate of the one you've done it with," he said. "And so we haven’t gotten any of those results back and we will over the next day or two. And then we will know whether we have one or not."
Vermes continued to emphasize his confidence in the club and league's safety protocols in place.
"We've taken all the appropriate steps ... and so I feel very comfortable with the place that we're at," Vermes said.
