KANSAS CITY, Kan. — Down in the standings and in desperate need for three points, Sporting Kansas City pulled one out of its hat Thursday night with a 1-0 win over Minnesota United FC.

After several near misses, SKC forward Erik Hurtado scored the lone goal of the match in the 88th minute at Children's Mercy Park.

Sporting held on through stoppage time and picked up its second straight win.

The victory bumps Peter Vermes' squad from 10th place up to 9th place in the Western Conference standings.

More importantly, Sporting is just three points out from the final playoff spot with seven matches to go. Six of Sporting's remaining opponents are teams above them in the standings.

The club hasn't missed the playoffs since 2010.

SKC will next play Aug. 31 at home against the Houston Dynamo.
