It's been a rather eventful year for Kansas City sports.
While the top sports story will be no surprise, there were some other interesting stories on the year.
5. Wichita State 'shocks' the Jayhawks in the NCAA Tournament. For the first time in years, Wichita State and Kansas hooked up on the basketball court. It's the match-up Shockers head coach Gregg Marshall has wanted for his program - and they took full advantage of it. The underdog Shockers took it to the Jayhawks, running away with the game in the second. The Jayhawks have rebounded since then, winning the gold medal over the summer and jumping to number two in the country as of Christmas Eve.
4. Chiefs resurrect season after 1-5 start. In early October, Chiefs fans were wondering how high their draft pick would be in 2016. Two months later, the Chiefs are in prime position to make the postseason. They enter Sunday's game with a 9-5 record. The Chiefs control their own destiny and even have an outside shot of a division title, should Denver drop one of two games along the way.
3. Missouri Tigers head coach Gary Pinkel resigns. No Missouri football head coach had more wins than Gary Pinkel. His final win as the Mizzou head coach came in 2015, as he resigned due to health reasons. During his time at Mizzou, Pinkel won 118 games, including five division championships in the Big 12 and SEC. Two of Pinkel's Mizzou teams finished in the Top 5 in the postseason poll.
2. Missouri football team takes center stage of controversy. For at least 24 hours, there was some doubt Mizzou would play its game against BYU at Arrowhead Stadium. The team announced they would strike in an effort to get university system president Tim Wolfe to resign. Wolfe resigned and it was game on at Arrowhead Stadium.
1. Royals win the World Series. A year after an agonizing World Series loss against the San Francisco Giants, the Royals returned to the World Series and this time, were crowned as world champions. It was the team's first World Series win in 30 years.
