KANSAS CITY, Mo. — It's the Royals' opening day, and Union Station continues its tradition of lighting the building blue to celebrate.

"Union Station, the 'Grand Lady' is the one that welcomes everything to Kansas city so on every picture, on every television, it's Union Station," Union Station President George Guastello said. "So it's very fitting for the Grand Lady to take the lead in saying, 'Welcome Royals' for another great year."

While the building is nearly 105 years old, Guastello said it has one of the most technologically advanced lighting systems.

"We have over 70 LEDs that illuminate the front, sides and the insides of the building," Guastello said. "It's all controlled by a central system. You can actually change it with our lighting designers on their phones, so if they're in front and if we need to make an immediate change, it can be done immediately."

The team has it practically down to a science when it comes to colors.

"We know exactly what the specific Royal blue is and then it's specifically designed for the entire building," Guastello said.

Guastello said it's just one more way for the city to celebrate.

"You know, Union Station is the central piece to our home, it's Kansas City's heart," Guastello said. "It's where we celebrate Kansas City. It's where we did the World Series so when you see Union Station , it says 'Welcome Royals.' It now has the Streetcar that pulls up. We bleed blue, this building's blue, everything is there and we look for a great season and hopefully this year we'll be back at the World Series."

Lights come on at sunset and stay on until sunrise.
