Weather Blog - Another Storm Swings & Misses Kansas City

Posted
and last updated

Good morning bloggers,

It's another swing and a miss from a potential storm system. Kansas City will be left high and dry with no rain or snow from this current system. Is this a trend for the entire winter? Our winter forecast is coming out on Thursday night at 6:30 PM on 41 Action News.

Take a look at this system beginning to spin around over eastern Colorado into Kansas, shown above. This system is the energy that dropped south from Canada and is now trying to organize into a functional plains storm. It has developed in such a way to leave Kansas City high and dry. Here is the data that just came out showing the forecast map valid at 6 AM Thursday.

There is a rain/snow line just west of Wichita, KS. The forecast for Wichita meteorologists is a very difficult one as some spots will see significant snow and others will have a slushy rain/snow mix. Here is our latest in-house model:

On this model, there is very little organization to the rain and snow early tomorrow morning. Again, this is a nightmare for the Wichita forecasters, while here in Kansas City it is easy. It will be dry again, even though we are so close to this developing storm. Here is one snowfall accumulation forecast:

A dusting is predicted as close as Garnett, KS, but the rest of our viewing area gets not even a drop or a snowflake. That Garnett dusting is also suspect as you are on the edge down there. We are seeing a potential mid-December storm, so more on that in the coming week.

Kansas City Weather Timeline:

  • Today: High clouds streaming overhead from that storm to the south. The sun will shine through. Light winds! High: 50°
  • Tonight: Partly cloudy and staying dry. Some rain or snow showers are possible way south of KC near Pleasanton and Garnett, KS: Low: 31°
  • Thursday: Mostly cloudy and cool. High: 39°

Our "GET READY FOR WINTER" special begins at 6:30 PM Thursday evening (tomorrow). We will have all of our weather team's snowfall predictions and our special segments on La Niña, ice on ponds, freezing rain development, and the beauty of snowflakes. Set your DVR.

Thank you for spending a few minutes reading the Action Weather Blog. Have a great Wednesday.
