A Wintry Start to April

Posted

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The calendar says April, but mother nature does not seem to care as we have snow and sleet on April 1st and this is not the only chance of winter weather this month.

Here are the top 4 things you need to know about this wintry April weather.

1. Will there be school closings on Monday, April 2nd?

The snow and sleet will end by 6-8 PM, so crews will have all night to treat the roads. Now, that being said, some of the outlying schools in rural areas may be closed as any surfaces untreated will be slick.

2. Are there going to be more chances of snow this month?

The answer is yes. We are watching a system for April 5-8 as we will see another cold blast. This is the same pattern from the winter and remember how hard it was to get snow December through March. So, most likely, if we see snow it will be a small amount. But, the same pattern in the Spring can net different results, so stay tuned! There will also be a slight chance of another snow during the middle of the month.

3. When can I get in the yard and start planting?

We are looking at freezes at least through April 20th. Some of these freezes will be significant with lows around 20. So, I would wait until the end of the month or even May.

4. Is this cold a sign for the Spring?

Remember, this is the same pattern from the winter and even though we struggled receiving snow, we were, on average, slightly below average on temperatures when you look at December through February. So, yes, it is looking like a cool Spring and may keep Summer comfortable as the same pattern keeps cycling through September.
