KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Trooper Ben from the Kansas Highway Patrol is urging drivers not to get complacent as they head to work Tuesday morning. He warned roads and highways can refreeze as the temperatures dipped into the low 20s overnight.
At those temperatures, the treatment municipalities spread on the road to melt ice is not effective. There is nothing they can do to prevent icing when air and surface temps get into low 20s.
The trooper recommended drivers respect the road, driving according to the conditions.
KDOT sent crews out overnight to focus on trouble spots in the Kansas City area. A spokesperson expects ice on bridges.
MoDOT warned what drivers saw as slush Monday is probably ice Tuesday morning. With more people expected to drive this morning compared to Monday, MoDOT anticipates more issues.
In Kansas City, Missouri, crews worked since midnight plowing and treating the main roads. Special bridge and frost crews are scheduled to begin work at 3:30 a.m. Another set of crews will start hitting residential streets at dawn.
Lee’s Summit plans to have everything clear by 1:47 a.m. Wednesday.
In Overland Park, crews worked overnight treating roads. They hope to have the entire city clear and treated by midday.
