Flash flood breaks record high crest level for Indian Creek by two feet

How this compares to major floods in the past

Indian Creek floods often during a torrential rain event, but the measurements during the high waters Thursday morning set a new record high at the State Line guage site.

Indian Creek typically runs around 11 feet high at State Line. The morning of July 27, though, the creek rose nearly 17 feet in only a couple hours.

The creek crested at 27.96 feet at 6:15 a.m. This reading broke the previous record set back in 2010 by more than two feet.

Records for this location only go back to 2004, so it's hard to say if this crest height has or hasn't been reached in the past.

A river guage site nearby in Overland Park on Indian Creek near Metcalf and I-435 has kept records since 1964. Thursday, the crest height in the Overland Park location reached 17.97 feet, breaking the previous record of 17.78 feet from June 9, 1984.
