KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Tuesday's snow event has evolved into one that we've seen for the last four years; it's becoming a snowstorm under 3 inches.
Here are the top 5 things you need to know about this snow event.
1. Should I leave work early due to slick roads for the evening rush hour?
No, as the snow band we are tracking will not arrive until after 7-8 PM, and there is still a chance it misses us. So, if you are in KC, the evening rush hour is looking dry and cold.
2. Will school be closed Wednesday?
The snow ends by 1-2 AM, assuming it starts, so there will be plenty of time for crews to take care of most of the roads.
Now, that being said, there may be some closings in outlying areas, especially in northern Missouri. Also, predicting school closings is not easy as even with a light snowfall some may close.
3. When is the best timing for the snow to occur in Kansas City?
A band of snow will likely sweep across the city from northwest to southeast, lasting one to two hours in any one location, between 7 PM and midnight with a quick dusting to 1" possible. There is still a chance this band of snow does not materialize or we just see flurries.
4. What will conditions be like for the Wednesday morning rush hour?
The sky will be clearing with temperatures 5°-10°, and wind chill values around zero. There will be slick spots, but if you take it slow and use caution, it will likely be fine.
5. When was the last time it snowed more than 3" in one storm?
The date was February 4, 2014, or 1,463 days ago. There has been an average snowfall per storm of 0.8" in around 40 snow events since that date.
There is another system to track this weekend, and it has potential to break the streak, but we know how that has been going.
